    Head of Accounting role description

An accounting manager is generally responsible for both the accounting department and any accounting employees. It’s the accounting manager’s role to ensure that the accounting team has the resources they require to deliver the best results possible. Additionally, they should see to it that financial statements and annual reports are drawn up correctly, as well as adhering to any regulation changes in the financial environment. This role generally reports directly to the CFO.

The degree of operational work in this role often correlates to the organization’s size. In a smaller accounting department, it is standard for an Accounting Manager to work hands-on with the accounts and may also be responsible for preparing annual accounts and annual reports. In larger companies, the operational tasks usually tend to be replaced by more strategic work and management.

The finance department and its design

The accounting department can be likened to the heart of the finance department. It holds vital importance in small, medium, and large-cap organizations. In smaller companies, it’s not uncommon for a single individual to shoulder the entire financial responsibility of the accounting team. They often have the title of finance manager. As the size and complexity of the organization grow, so does the finance department. In small/mid-cap companies the standard set-up usually contains a finance manager, accountants, and accounting clerks/bookkeepers. In large organizations, finance functions often consist of multiple individuals who often have specialized roles i.e. some accounting clerks will focus entirely on accounts payable or receivable and handling the invoice process between clients and suppliers, payroll specialists, tax specialists, etc. Generally, the accounting manager has overall responsibility for this team and often reports directly to the CFO.

    Skills and competences

An accounts manager is expected to have a solid background and knowledge of accounting and is able to be self-sufficient with strong analytical skills. This is required as this role likely has the responsibility of annual reporting and financial statements. Furthermore, an accounts manager should be a confident decision-maker who knows how to prioritize and delegate when required. It is advantageous to have a long-standing experience in similar roles.

It is important to highlight that an accounts manager should have solid leadership skills when the position requires the management of other accounting specialists. Like any good leader, making sure the team has the tools to succeed is key, in addition to understanding that a good leader can adapt to the different needs of different individuals. It goes without saying that leadership requires sharp social skills and empathy.

    Software knowledge

Being financial software savvy is definitely advantageous for our customers. We are therefore selective in our scouting process. Our candidates should have good knowledge of one or more financial systems i.e. consolidation systems such as Aaro, Hyperion (HFM), Cognos (Cognos Controller) and Ocra, and large ERP systems such as SAP, Agresso, Navision, or Visma.

    Industry Experience

Our recruiters at CFO Recruitment have industry experience, and we believe this is key in pairing the right individual with the right client. With our own background in finance, we can quickly identify the resource issue and what is required to find a high-quality solution. We pull fitting, available professionals from our extensive network to connect with our clients. We at CFO Recruitment have had a broad range of job titles, come from different branches, and organization sizes, and can understand the complexity and nuances of each client request. We are also aware of how important culture and industry knowledge is and work to fit the right individual with the right placement.

    Salary accounting manager

The salary of an accounting manager is dependent on the profile requested i.e. the degree of responsibility, competence, education, industry experience, etc. Market trends have indicated high demand and low supply over the last couple of years which has led to increasing costs. However, our well-established accounting manager network includes a large number of professionals with different profiles and we’re confident we’ll be able to connect our customers and candidates correctly.

    Find an accounting manager

We aren’t the only ones in our market space. A couple of our competitors are Michael Page and Robert Half. However, we at CFO Recruitment are working at the forefront of scouting high-quality & talented accounting manager candidates and relish any competition that keeps us on our toes.
